Why this directory
Most swim schools are built around kids, and Google Maps can't tell you which ones teach adults. We check each provider's own website for adult lessons, whether complete beginners are welcome, private and group options, programs for adults who are afraid of the water, year-round pools and what a lesson costs.
Browse by city, or go straight to beginner lessons or private swim lessons for adults.

Questions people ask
- Am I too old to learn to swim?
- No. Swim schools, YMCAs, city pools and university pools teach adults who have never swum, and many run beginner classes just for adults so you aren't in the water with children. Look for places marked beginner-friendly.
- Are private or group lessons better for adults?
- Private lessons go at your pace and suit nervous beginners. Group classes cost less and are good once you're comfortable in the water. Each listing says which ones a place offers, when its website does.
- I'm scared of the water. Where should I start?
- Look for places marked as having a fear-of-water program. Their websites say they teach adults who are anxious in the water, usually starting in the shallow end at your own pace. Private lessons are another good start.
- How much do adult swim lessons cost?
- It varies by city and type of place. Where a provider publishes the price of one adult lesson, we show it on the listing and the city page, and our price guide compares them.
